Peringatan Hari Hak Asasi Manusia Sedunia ini didasarkan pada pengadopsian Deklarasi Universal Hak Asasi Manusia (UDHR) oleh Majelis Umum PBB pada 10 Desember 1948.

UDHR merupakan dokumen penting dalam sejarah HAM dunia yang menyatakan bahwa setiap orang memiliki hak-hak tertentu yang tidak dapat dicabut.
